DESCRIPTION

Echinodorus ‘Aflame’ – Potted Plant

Overview

The Echinodorus ‘Aflame’ is a stunning, compact sword plant variety known for its deeply dark red leaves and striking visual impact. Introduced around 2005, this cultivar quickly became popular for its vibrant coloration and elegant leaf shape reminiscent of Echinodorus ‘Dschungelstar’ No. 16, though it remains much smaller—making it suitable even for medium and smaller aquariums.

Its rich red hues provide a bold contrast against green aquatic plants, making it a perfect midground focal point or specimen plant in any aquascape.

Key Features:

Deep Red Coloration: The intensely dark red to purple-toned leaves add dramatic contrast and warmth to planted tanks.

Compact Growth: Smaller than most sword plants, ideal for medium-sized and even smaller aquariums.

Light-Loving Plant: Requires good lighting to maintain its deep coloration and healthy, compact growth.

Aquascaping Highlight: Perfect for adding a strong color accent in the midground or as a vibrant centerpiece.

Care Requirements:

Lighting: High light is essential to bring out the vivid red tones and prevent the leaves from turning greenish.

CO₂: Not essential but recommended for faster, healthier growth and deeper color saturation.

Water Parameters: Prefers slightly acidic to neutral water (pH 5.0–7.0) with a temperature range of 15–30°C. Tolerant of a wide range of hardness levels.

Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate supports strong root development and vivid leaf coloration.

Trimming: Remove old or damaged leaves regularly to encourage new, healthy growth.

Planting Tips:

  • Plant directly into the substrate, ensuring the crown (where the leaves emerge) remains above the surface.

  • Provide bright lighting and consistent fertilization for best color and form.

  • Can also be grown emersed in humid terrarium or paludarium setups.

  • Propagation is easy through proliferating inflorescences or by dividing mature rhizomes.

Why Choose Echinodorus ‘Aflame’?

With its luxurious dark red coloration, manageable size, and bold presence, Echinodorus ‘Aflame’ adds a touch of drama and sophistication to any planted aquarium. It’s a must-have for aquascapers seeking a vibrant focal point that thrives under strong light and enhances visual depth in the aquascape.
