DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Pure Black Line (Mix), often abbreviated as PBL, is a selectively bred line within the Caridina cf. cantonensis species complex, focusing on deep black coloration and diverse pattern expression. This shrimp originates from Taiwan Bee stock and has been refined through generations of breeding to produce individuals with intensely saturated black hues, often combined with varying amounts of white in panda, king kong, or other high-grade patterns. The term “Mix” indicates that this group contains a variety of black-based pattern morphs, offering a dynamic look within a single tank population.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–24 °C

    • pH Range: 5.5–6.5

    • Hardness: Soft water; GH 4–6, KH 0–1

    • TDS: 100–140 ppm

  • Diet:
Feed a diverse diet of high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables like spinach or nettle leaves, and naturally occurring biofilm. Occasional supplementation with protein-based foods helps support molting and fertility but should be limited to prevent fouling.

  • Tank Setup:
A minimum of 20 litres with a dark, active buffering substrate (e.g., ADA Amazonia) helps stabilize pH and promotes optimal conditions for soft-water Caridina. RO water with proper remineralization is essential. Incorporate mosses, shrimp shelters, and leaf litter to promote biofilm growth and provide cover. Gentle filtration via sponge or shrimp-guarded filters ensures water clarity without strong currents.

  • Behavior:
Calm and communal, PBL shrimp thrive in peaceful environments with consistent parameters. They exhibit natural group foraging behavior and are best kept in colonies of 10 or more to encourage activity and breeding. As with all Taiwan Bee types, sudden parameter changes can cause stress or mortality.

  • Tank Mates:
Ideal companions include other soft water Caridina strains with similar needs. Avoid any species that may outcompete them or show aggression, including most fish, large snails, and even some types of Neocaridina. Best results occur in species-only or dedicated breeding tanks.

Care Tips:

Prioritize stable conditions—monitor GH, KH, TDS, and pH frequently. Use shrimp-specific mineral products to remineralize RO water, and avoid medications or fertilizers containing copper. Minimal but consistent feeding supports biofilm reliance and reduces water fouling. Regularly remove waste and leftover food.

With its velvety black tones and mix of elite patterns, the Pure Black Line (Mix) is a striking showcase of modern shrimp genetics. Its elegance and rarity make it a top choice for advanced keepers seeking beauty and breeding potential in a single lineage.
