Understanding pH in Your Aquarium

The pH 6–7.6 Test is designed for aquariums where specific pH control is important, such as tanks with sensitive species or tropical community setups requiring a neutral environment. This test offers quick and accurate readings within the range of pH 6.0 to 7.6, with a precision of 0.2 units, allowing for fine adjustments and careful monitoring.

Ideal pH Levels

There is no single correct pH value for all aquariums, as each fish species has its own preferred range. Most tropical freshwater fish thrive in a pH between 7.0 and 8.0, but exceptions exist. When setting up your aquarium or adding new fish, always check with your aquatic retailer for the ideal pH requirements of each species.

Managing Incorrect pH Levels

If you need to adjust the pH, it is important to do so gradually to avoid stressing your fish. Never change the pH by more than 0.5 units over a two-day period.

  • If your tap water has a suitable pH, regular partial water changes can help restore and maintain proper levels

  • Always check the KH (carbonate hardness), as this affects pH stability

  • Use products like KH Up – pH Stabiliser to increase pH in soft or aged water

  • To lower pH for species that prefer acidic conditions, add bogwood, which gently softens and acidifies the water over time

Controlled, steady changes are key to maintaining a stable aquarium environment.

How to Perform a pH Test

  1. Ensure the test tube is clean

  2. Add 5 millilitres of aquarium water to the test tube

  3. Add 5 drops of the pH reagent

  4. Cap the test tube and shake thoroughly

  5. Compare the resulting colour to the provided colour chart to determine the pH level

Using the NTLabs pH 6–7.6 Test allows you to accurately monitor and fine-tune your water chemistry, helping to keep your fish healthy and your aquarium environment stable.
