Ludwigia arcuata

Ludwigia arcuata is a fine-leaved, vibrant stem plant native to the USA, admired for its delicate texture and rich orange to red coloration under the right conditions. Its graceful, needle-like leaves and upright growth habit make it ideal for adding warmth and movement to the midground or background of aquascapes, especially in smaller tanks.

More Information:
Often confused with Ludwigia brevipes or Didiplis diandra, Ludwigia arcuata stands out with its fine, needle-like leaves and thinner stems, giving it a more delicate appearance. It is far easier to grow than Didiplis diandra and tolerates a wide range of water parameters, making it accessible to intermediate aquarists aiming for a colourful aquascape.

Under medium lighting, the plant develops light orange tones, while intense red and dense branching are achieved with high light, added CO₂, and well-managed nutrient levels. Its colour intensifies dramatically when nitrate levels in the water column are reduced to below 5 ppm—a technique known as nitrate limitation. However, to balance both colour and compact bushiness, it’s ideal to combine low nitrate in the water with a nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs.

Ludwigia arcuata responds well to trimming and can be pruned aggressively to encourage bushy, compact growth and side shoots. It tolerates dense planting and is especially suited for Dutch-style layouts or nature-style tanks where vibrant mid-to-background contrast is desired.

In optimal conditions, this plant becomes a vibrant, red-highlighted focal point in any aquascape—especially when paired with green plants or hardscape for contrast.
