Hydrocotyle bonariensis – Description

Hydrocotyle bonariensis is a charming, creeping plant known for its distinctive round, umbrella-like leaves and soft trailing growth habit. Native to South America, this species is commonly found along marshes, wet banks, and shallow waters, where it grows both emersed and partially submerged. In aquariums it offers a fresh, natural look, forming clusters of bright green leaves that create movement and contrast among other plants.

This species grows steadily under moderate light and can adapt to both low-tech and high-tech setups. When grown submerged, its stems produce small, coin-shaped leaves that spread horizontally, making it useful as a mid-ground accent plant, foreground bush, or trailing feature over hardscape. It also performs beautifully in paludariums, ripariums, or terrariums, where it grows more robustly emersed. Propagation is simple—just trim and replant healthy stems to encourage fuller clusters and spreading growth.
