DESCRIPTION

Clithon corona (Horned Nerite Snail)

Background:

Clithon corona, commonly known as the Horned Nerite Snail, is a hardy and visually captivating addition to freshwater and brackish aquariums. Native to Southeast Asia's rivers, streams, and tidal zones, these snails are easily recognized by their small, rounded shells adorned with horn-like spines. Their unique patterns and colors—ranging from black and gold stripes to spiral markings—make them both functional and decorative in aquascapes.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

    • pH: 6.5–8.5

    • Hardness: 6–12 dGH (moderately hard to hard water)

  • Diet: Primarily algae grazers, Horned Nerite Snails consume diatoms, soft algae, and biofilm, helping maintain a clean aquarium. Supplement their diet with algae wafers or blanched vegetables if natural food sources are insufficient.

  • Tank Setup: These snails prefer well-established tanks with clean, stable water conditions. Smooth substrates, driftwood, and rocks provide grazing surfaces, while plants add additional foraging areas.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and non-intrusive, Horned Nerite Snails coexist harmoniously in community tanks and spend their time actively scavenging for algae.

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 20 liters (5 gallons) to accommodate their grazing needs.

Care Tips:

  • Ensure a secure lid on the aquarium, as Nerite Snails may explore above the waterline.

  • Avoid sudden water parameter changes, as snails are sensitive to fluctuations.

  • Horned Nerites require calcium-rich water to maintain healthy shell development; consider supplements if needed.

  • They cannot reproduce in freshwater, preventing overpopulation while ensuring algae control.

Suitable Tank Mates:

  • Peaceful Nano Fish (e.g., Rasboras, Tetras)

  • Shrimp (e.g., Neocaridina and Caridina)

  • Corydoras Catfish

  • Otocinclus Catfish

Clithon corona is the perfect addition to any aquascape, combining practical algae-cleaning abilities with unique, eye-catching aesthetics. Their peaceful nature and adaptability make them ideal for hobbyists looking to enhance both the beauty and balance of their aquariums.
