DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Panda Garra, Garra flavatra, is a striking and robust freshwater fish native to the fast-flowing streams and rivers of Myanmar. Named for its distinctive black and white banding pattern resembling a panda’s markings, this species adds both beauty and activity to aquariums. Panda Garras are known for their algae-grazing habits and playful, energetic demeanor. Growing to about 8–10 cm, they are hardy and adaptable, making them an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a versatile and visually appealing fish for a fast-flowing community or biotope tank.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–26°C
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: 4–12 dGH
  • Diet:
While naturally inclined to graze on algae and biofilm, Panda Garras benefit from a varied diet. Provide high-quality sinking pellets or algae wafers, supplemented with blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, as well as occasional live or frozen foods such as bloodworms and brine shrimp. Regular feedings ensure optimal health and energy levels.

  • Tank Setup:
A tank of at least 100 liters is recommended for this active species. Use a sandy or smooth gravel substrate to mimic their natural environment. Add plenty of rocks, driftwood, and smooth stones to create surfaces for grazing and perching. A strong water current is essential, achieved through the use of powerheads or stream pumps. Incorporate hardy plants such as Java fern or Anubias attached to rocks or driftwood for added aesthetic appeal.

  • Behavior:
Panda Garras are active, semi-social fish with an inquisitive nature. While they are generally peaceful, they can exhibit territorial behavior toward conspecifics or other bottom-dwellers, especially in smaller tanks. Providing ample space and hiding spots minimizes these interactions.

  • Tank Mates:
Compatible with other robust, fast-water species such as Hillstream Loaches, White Cloud Mountain Minnows, and Danios. They can also coexist with peaceful mid-to-top-dwelling species. Avoid pairing them with slow-moving or delicate fish that may struggle in strong currents.

Care Tips:

Maintain excellent water quality and ensure a strong current with good oxygenation to mimic their natural habitat. Regular water changes and a robust filtration system are essential. While they are capable algae-eaters, supplementing their diet with quality foods is crucial for long-term health. Provide plenty of hardscape elements to create territories and reduce aggression in smaller groups.

The Panda Garra is a hardy and energetic addition to fast-flowing setups. Its striking appearance, utility as an algae grazer, and lively personality make it a favorite among aquarists seeking a unique and active fish to enhance the biodiversity and aesthetics of their aquarium.
