Introduction:

Echinodorus amazonicus, commonly known as the Amazon Sword, is a popular and hardy aquatic plant that adds a lush, natural look to freshwater aquariums. Native to the Amazon River basin, this species features long, narrow, sword-like leaves that range from bright to deep green. Its elegant foliage makes it an excellent choice for background placement in planted tanks, providing a striking contrast to smaller plants while offering shelter for fish and shrimp. Due to its adaptability and ease of care, Echinodorus amazonicus is a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters: Thrives in temperatures between 22-28°C, with a pH range of 6.5-7.5 and soft to moderately hard water.
  • Nutrient Requirements: Requires a nutrient-rich substrate for optimal growth. Benefits from root tabs and liquid fertilization, particularly those rich in iron, to maintain vibrant green leaves. CO₂ supplementation is not necessary but can encourage faster growth.
  • Tank Setup: Best suited for midground to background placement. Prefers a fine-grain, nutrient-dense substrate for root anchoring. Moderate to high lighting ensures healthy growth, but it can tolerate lower light conditions.

Care Tips:

Echinodorus amazonicus can grow quite large, so regular trimming may be needed to maintain its shape and prevent overcrowding. As it is a heavy root feeder, supplementing with root tabs helps sustain its lush appearance. When planting, ensure the crown of the plant is above the substrate to prevent rot.
