Heckel Cross Discus (Symphysodon spp.)

The Heckel Cross Discus is a stunning hybrid variety derived from the classic Heckel Discus (Symphysodon discus) and other domesticated or wild strains. Renowned for its vibrant coloration and striking vertical bar pattern—often showcasing the characteristic central bar of the Heckel lineage—this fish is a favorite among aquarists for its unique beauty and heritage.

Origin

The Heckel Cross is typically bred in captivity and combines the genes of the wild Heckel Discus (native to the Rio Negro region of Brazil) with other discus strains to achieve a hardier, more adaptable fish while retaining the iconic central body bar and symmetrical form of the Heckel.

Feeding

Heckel Cross Discus thrive on a varied diet that includes:

  • High-quality pellets and flakes formulated for discus

  • Frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and beef heart

  • Occasional vegetable-based foods to promote digestion

Regular feeding (2–3 times daily) in small amounts helps maintain health and color vibrancy.

Breeding

Like other discus, breeding the Heckel Cross requires:

  • Pair bonding, usually from a group raised together

  • Slightly acidic, soft water

  • High water quality and a quiet environment

  • Spawning typically occurs on vertical surfaces such as slate or aquarium glass, followed by parental care of the eggs and fry

Water Parameters

  • pH: 6.0 – 6.8

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately soft (1–8 dGH)

  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

  • Nitrate: < 20 ppm

Temperature

  • Optimal range: 28°C – 30°C

Warm, clean, and stable water is crucial for their health and coloration.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum tank size: 208L (for a small group)

  • Tankmates: Other peaceful, temperature-compatible fish (e.g., cardinal tetras, corydoras,)

  • Aquascaping: Gentle filtration, shaded areas with driftwood and plants, and ample swimming space
