Introduction:
Riccardia chamedryfolia, often referred to as Coral Moss or Mini Pellia, is a highly decorative liverwort species prized in aquascaping for its intricate, coral-like structure and deep green coloration. Native to parts of Southeast Asia, this plant grows in dense, branching mats that resemble tiny underwater corals, making it a visually striking choice for hardscape coverage. Its compact size and creeping habit allow it to cling to driftwood, rocks, and other aquarium décor, adding fine texture and a naturalistic touch to both nano and large-scale aquascapes.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20–26°C
pH Range: 5.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (1–10°dGH)
Nutrient Requirements:
Riccardia chamedryfolia absorbs nutrients from the water column, so regular liquid fertilization with micronutrients supports healthy, dense growth. CO₂ injection is strongly recommended to enhance vitality and encourage compact, lush mats. It does not require substrate fertilization, making it ideal for attachment-based layouts.
Tank Setup:
Best used as a decorative element on hardscape, this liverwort is attached to driftwood, rocks, or mesh using fine thread or aquarium-safe glue. It prefers moderate to high lighting to maintain its form and avoid disintegration. Gentle water flow is essential to keep detritus from accumulating in its fine branching structure, which can otherwise hinder growth.
Care Tips:
Keep the plant clean by occasionally gently agitating or brushing its surface during water changes. Trim regularly to maintain a dense mat and prevent overgrowth, which can lead to detachment or decay underneath. Stability in lighting and CO₂ will ensure consistent, attractive growth. Avoid strong flow that might dislodge the delicate thallus from its mounting surface.
Riccardia chamedryfolia adds exquisite detail and a lush, natural aesthetic to aquascapes with its miniature branching growth and deep green tone. Ideal for artistic, nature-style, or moss-dominated layouts, it’s a favorite among aquascapers seeking refined texture and visual depth in hardscape composition.
