DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Rotala indica 'Bonsai', often called Bonsai Rotala, is a compact and uniquely structured cultivar of Rotala indica, highly prized for its dense, miniature growth and tiny, rounded leaves. Despite the name, this plant is not a true bonsai but rather named for its tree-like appearance when densely planted and trimmed. Native to Asia, this slow-growing species is ideal for foreground to midground placement in aquascapes, particularly in nano tanks or layouts that demand a clean, structured aesthetic. Its tidy form and horizontal branching habit make it a perfect choice for creating "bushes" or defined lines within a layout.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–28°C

    • pH Range: 5.5–7.5

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12°dGH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
Rotala indica 'Bonsai' benefits from regular liquid fertilization, especially with micronutrients to support vibrant growth and avoid stunting. A nutrient-rich substrate can support root development but is secondary to water column dosing. CO₂ injection is strongly recommended to promote healthy, compact growth and avoid stretching.

  • Tank Setup:
Best suited for foreground to midground zones, especially in well-lit aquariums. Moderate to high lighting encourages tight internodal spacing and maintains the low, bushy appearance. It thrives in fine-grain substrate and should be planted densely in small bunches to form cohesive groupings. Gentle water flow is sufficient for nutrient distribution and oxygenation.

Care Tips:

Frequent trimming encourages denser lateral branching and helps maintain the plant’s miniature, structured look. Replant healthy cuttings to expand or thicken the growth area. Avoid shading from larger plants to preserve its compact form. Consistency in CO₂ and nutrient levels is essential, as fluctuations can cause slow or uneven growth.

Rotala indica 'Bonsai' brings a refined, manicured look to aquascapes, offering precise form and vibrant color in a compact package. Its ease of shaping and slow, controlled growth make it a favorite among aquascapers aiming for clean layout lines or miniature landscape effects.
