DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Hygrophila pinnatifida, often called Pinnatifida Hygro, is a highly distinctive and decorative aquatic plant native to India. It is instantly recognizable by its deeply lobed, fern-like leaves that range in color from olive green to reddish-brown, often displaying striking purple undersides. This versatile plant adds a wild, textured look to aquascapes and is favored for its ability to be grown both rooted in substrate and epiphytically on hardscape. Its unusual form and coloration make it a standout midground or accent plant in both natural and high-tech planted tanks.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–28°C

    • pH Range: 6.0–7.5

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12°dGH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
Hygrophila pinnatifida requires consistent fertilization through both the water column and substrate. Iron-rich liquid fertilizers help enhance its reddish hues. CO₂ injection is strongly recommended to maintain compact, vibrant growth and prevent leggy stems. Root tabs can support plants grown in substrate, though it's equally successful when attached to rocks or wood.

  • Tank Setup:
Ideal for midground use or attached to hardscape for a semi-epiphytic presentation. It thrives in fine gravel or aquasoil but also anchors well on driftwood and stone. Moderate to high lighting is necessary to preserve coloration and compact form. Ensure gentle to moderate water flow to prevent detritus buildup in its lobed leaves.

Care Tips:

Trim regularly to control height and promote bushier lateral growth. When attached to hardscape, use aquarium-safe glue or thread and avoid burying the rhizome. Provide stable CO₂ and fertilization to bring out the full spectrum of its coloration. Its slower growth makes it relatively easy to manage in well-balanced tanks.

Hygrophila pinnatifida brings a rugged, natural elegance to aquascapes with its unique leaf shape and multi-tonal foliage. Whether used to soften hardscape lines or as a focal point, it offers texture, contrast, and a touch of the exotic for hobbyists looking to elevate their aquarium layout.
