Dennerle - Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia' is available for pre-order – please confirm stock before ordering!
Introduction:
Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia', commonly referred to as Araguaia Hygrophila, is a uniquely colored stem plant that brings a warm, reddish-brown tone to aquascapes. Despite the name, this cultivar is not native to the Araguaia River in Brazil but is believed to originate from Asia, possibly Japan. Its narrow, lance-shaped leaves and rich autumn-like hues make it an excellent choice for adding color contrast and structure, particularly in midground areas. With a bushy, horizontal growth pattern under strong lighting and CO₂, it’s especially favored in nature-style and color-focused aquascapes.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12°dGH)
Nutrient Requirements:
Hygrophila 'Araguaia' thrives with nutrient-rich substrates and regular dosing of liquid fertilizers, particularly with micronutrients and iron to enhance its coloration. CO₂ injection is highly recommended to promote compact, lateral growth and deepen its red-brown hues. A nutrient deficiency or lack of CO₂ may cause legginess or dull color.
Tank Setup:
Ideal for midground placement, especially in contrast with green foliage, this plant prefers aquasoil or enriched substrates. High lighting is essential to maintain its compact growth and rich coloration. A gentle to moderate water flow ensures good nutrient distribution and helps keep the leaves free of debris.
Care Tips:
Trim regularly to encourage bushier lateral growth and prevent vertical stretching. Replant healthy tops to maintain fullness. Avoid overshadowing the plant with taller species, as sufficient light is crucial for vibrant coloration. Consistency in CO₂ and fertilization will keep the plant in optimal health and visual form.
Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia' is an excellent choice for aquarists seeking a rich, earthy accent plant that contrasts beautifully with bright greens and adds natural warmth to aquascapes. Its compact growth, low maintenance, and unique color make it a staple in carefully composed planted layouts.
