DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba', commonly known as Dwarf Baby Tears or HC Cuba, is one of the smallest and most popular carpeting plants in the aquarium hobby. Native to Cuba, this tiny-leaved foreground plant forms a lush, vibrant green mat that adds softness and depth to aquascapes. With proper lighting and CO₂, it creates a dense, cushion-like carpet that enhances both natural and high-tech layouts. Its fine, round leaves and compact growth make it especially suited for nano tanks and detailed scapes, while its origin and name distinguish it from other Hemianthus species.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–28°C

    • pH Range: 5.5–7.5

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (1–10°dGH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
HC Cuba requires nutrient-rich substrates and benefits greatly from CO₂ injection. This combination supports compact, horizontal growth and maintains its vivid green coloration. Regular dosing of liquid fertilizers, including iron and trace elements, is recommended to sustain healthy development and minimize melting or yellowing.

  • Tank Setup:
Ideal for the foreground of aquariums, this plant thrives in fine-grain substrates like aquasoil. High lighting is essential to maintain low, creeping growth and to prevent vertical stretching. Gentle water flow is important to distribute nutrients and prevent debris accumulation within the carpet.

Care Tips:

Plant HC Cuba in small clumps spaced evenly across the desired area to encourage spreading. CO₂ injection and high lighting are key to success, as inadequate conditions can lead to poor rooting or algae issues. Trim regularly to maintain a uniform carpet and to encourage lateral spreading over vertical growth. This species is sensitive to instability, so maintain consistent CO₂ and nutrient levels.

Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba' is a favorite among aquascapers for its ability to create vibrant, miniature landscapes. Its fine texture, compact habit, and vibrant green tones make it an essential plant for achieving professional-level aquascapes, especially in nano and high-tech tanks.
