DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Helanthium tenellum 'Red', often referred to as Red Pygmy Chain Sword, is a striking foreground carpeting plant known for its slender, grass-like leaves that display warm reddish tones under optimal conditions. Formerly classified under the genus Echinodorus, this cultivar is native to North and Central America and has become a favorite in aquascaping due to its low profile, spreading habit, and rich coloration. When provided with strong light and CO₂, the green blades shift to vibrant hues of red and bronze, creating a natural, meadow-like effect. This tissue culture form ensures a clean, algae- and pest-free start, ideal for delicate carpet establishment.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–28°C

    • pH Range: 6.0–7.5

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12°dGH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
Helanthium tenellum 'Red' requires a nutrient-rich substrate to support its carpet-like spread. Root tabs can enhance growth if nutrients are limited in the substrate. CO₂ injection is highly recommended to bring out its red coloration and to promote a compact, lush carpet. Regular dosing of liquid fertilizers will further support strong leaf development and overall vigor.

  • Tank Setup:
Ideal for the foreground of both small and large aquariums, this plant thrives in fine gravel or aquasoil. High lighting is essential to induce red coloration and maintain a short, compact growth form. A gentle water flow helps distribute nutrients evenly and prevents detritus buildup within the dense carpet.

Care Tips:

After planting tissue culture specimens, allow them time to adjust to submerged conditions. Trim back initial tall or melt-prone growth to encourage fresh runners. With proper light, CO₂, and nutrients, Helanthium tenellum 'Red' will quickly send out runners, forming a dense, colorful mat. Avoid shading from taller plants to maintain its vibrant tones and growth habit.

Helanthium tenellum 'Red' is a beautiful and rewarding choice for aquascapers aiming to create vibrant, naturalistic foregrounds. Its warm reddish hues and fine texture add depth and contrast, making it a standout plant in both high-energy and nature-style aquascapes.
