Dennerle - Blyxa japonica is available for pre-order – please confirm stock before ordering!
Blyxa japonica, often referred to as Japanese Blyxa, is a popular aquatic plant native to Southeast Asia and Japan, admired for its delicate, grass-like appearance and lush green foliage. Its slender, ribbon-like leaves form dense, bushy clusters, creating a soft, meadow-like effect in aquascapes. Under strong lighting, its leaves can develop subtle bronze or reddish tones, adding extra visual appeal. Despite its grass-like look, Blyxa japonica is a true aquatic plant—not a terrestrial grass—making it an excellent choice for natural-style layouts. This in vitro version ensures a pest-free, algae-free start for aquarists.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–10°dGH)
Nutrient Requirements:
Blyxa japonica thrives in nutrient-rich substrates and benefits from regular liquid fertilization. Iron-rich fertilizers are especially beneficial for enhancing color. CO₂ supplementation is highly recommended to achieve compact, healthy growth and richer coloration. Without CO₂, the plant may grow taller and less dense.
Tank Setup:
Best suited for midground placement or as a dense foreground in larger tanks, Blyxa japonica prefers fine gravel or aquasoil substrates that support root development. High lighting is essential to maintain its compact form and encourage bronze hues. Gentle to moderate water flow is ideal, replicating its natural habitat and preventing debris from settling among its fine leaves.
Care Tips:
Trim Blyxa japonica regularly to prevent it from overshadowing smaller plants and to encourage bushier growth. Frequent pruning of the top shoots can help maintain its dense, compact shape. Ensure good water circulation and stable CO₂ levels to prevent algae buildup on the fine leaves. In vitro specimens should be gently rinsed of gel medium before planting.
Blyxa japonica is a beautiful choice for aquascapers seeking to create soft, flowing textures and lush greenery in their aquariums. Its graceful, grass-like appearance, combined with vibrant coloration under the right conditions, makes it a rewarding plant for both beginners and advanced hobbyists.
