Introduction:
Bucephalandra pygmaea 'Bukit Kelam', often referred to simply as Bucephalandra 'Bukit Kelam', is a captivating and compact variety of Bucephalandra, native to the island of Borneo. Named after Bukit Kelam, a prominent granite hill in West Kalimantan, this plant is known for its small, lance-shaped leaves with a deep green to bluish-green hue and subtle iridescent sheen. When grown submerged, its leaves may display hints of metallic blue or purple under certain lighting. Highly valued in aquascaping for its slow growth and intricate texture, it is a perfect choice for nano tanks, foregrounds, and aquascapes focused on fine detail. While it may be casually shortened to "Buce 'Bukit Kelam'," this remains its most recognized name.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20–28°C
pH Range: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12°dGH)
Nutrient Requirements:
Bucephalandra 'Bukit Kelam' benefits from a stable supply of micronutrients via liquid fertilizers and root tabs placed near its rhizome. CO₂ injection is not essential but encourages denser growth and enhances coloration. Its slow-growing nature makes it susceptible to algae, so careful nutrient balance and good water quality are key.
Tank Setup:
Ideal when attached to hardscape elements such as rocks, driftwood, or small decorative structures. The rhizome must stay above the substrate to prevent rot. Fine gravel or sand can complement the hardscape without interfering with its growth. Moderate lighting is sufficient to bring out its subtle iridescence while limiting algae. A gentle water flow is preferred to replicate its native stream habitat and keep leaves clean.
Care Tips:
To maintain Bucephalandra 'Bukit Kelam' in optimal condition, place it in shaded or partially shaded areas of the tank to avoid algae buildup on its slow-growing leaves. Secure the rhizome carefully to hardscape using aquarium-safe glue or fine thread. Regularly monitor for algae and gently clean affected leaves if necessary. Trim old or damaged foliage to encourage new, healthy growth. Stability in water parameters will ensure this delicate plant thrives.
Bucephalandra 'Bukit Kelam' offers aquarists a refined, elegant plant with its compact form, rich coloration, and subtle shimmer. Perfect for adding texture and depth to nano tanks or as an accent in larger aquascapes, its resilience and unique beauty make it a treasured choice among plant enthusiasts.
