DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Bolbitis heteroclita difformis, commonly known as Mini Bolbitis or Bolbitis heteroclita difformis, is a petite, finely lobed fern highly prized in aquascaping for its delicate, ruffled “baby leaf” structure and slow, manageable growth. Originating from shaded stream banks in Southeast Asia, this compact variety is ideal for nano tanks, paludariums, and emersed riparium edges, providing a soft, textured accent in planted layouts. Its tolerance for varying humidity and ease of maintenance make it an excellent choice for hobbyists seeking a manageable foreground or midground fern with a classic rainforest aesthetic.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:
    Temperature: 20–26°C
    pH Range: 5.5–7.0
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (1–10 dGH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
Absorbs nutrients primarily through its rhizome and leaves. Benefits from a gentle liquid fertiliser in emersed setups, while submersed growth requires nutrient-rich water and occasional root feeding. CO₂ supplementation is optional but can support more robust growth under submersed conditions.

  • Tank Setup:
Minimum tank size: 10 litres (nano tanks, terrariums, and paludariums)
Substrate: Attach to hardscape (wood or rock) or allow to anchor lightly in aquasoil while ensuring the rhizome remains above substrate to prevent rot.
Decorations: Pairs well with driftwood and stones, creating a soft accent in shaded aquascapes or humid terrarium edges.
Lighting: Low to medium indirect light is ideal; direct, intense lighting may cause leaf burn or algae on leaves if submerged. High humidity (70–95%) is preferred for emersed growth.

Care Tips:

  • Avoid burying the rhizome to prevent rotting; tie or wedge securely on hardscape.

  • Maintain consistent moisture and high humidity in emersed setups.

  • Remove older leaves periodically to encourage new growth.

  • Slow-growing, so patience and stable conditions will yield the best results.

Mini Bolbitis is a beautifully textured, manageable fern perfect for adding a refined, natural feel to small aquascapes and humid terrarium setups. Its ruffled baby leaves and soft green tones complement mosses and wood features, allowing hobbyists to create lush rainforest edges with ease.
