Background:

The Blue Perch, Badis badis, is a striking freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers, ponds, and rice paddies of South Asia, particularly in India, Nepal, and Bangladesh. This species is a member of the Badidae family and is renowned for its vibrant blue and red coloration, which becomes more pronounced in dominant males. Growing to about 6–8 cm in length, Badis badis is a peaceful yet territorial fish with fascinating behaviors, particularly during courtship or while defending a territory. Its unique coloration and manageable care requirements make it an appealing choice for aquarists seeking something different for their community or species-only tanks.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–28°C
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: 4–15 dGH
  • Diet:
The Blue Perch is a carnivorous species that thrives on a diet of live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, daphnia, and blackworms. While it may accept high-quality pellets or flakes, its preference for live prey should be accommodated. Feed 1–2 times daily, offering portions that can be consumed within a few minutes.

  • Tank Setup:
A minimum tank size of 60 liters is recommended for a pair or a small group. A sandy or fine gravel substrate with ample hiding spots created by rocks, driftwood, and live plants like Java moss or Cryptocorynes provides an ideal environment. Dim lighting with shaded areas enhances their colors and helps reduce stress. Ensure good water quality and a gentle water flow, as they prefer calm environments.

  • Behavior:
Badis badis is a peaceful but territorial fish, especially during breeding. Males may establish and defend small territories but rarely cause harm to tank mates. They are generally slow-moving and spend time exploring caves and crevices.

  • Tank Mates:
Compatible tank mates include small, peaceful species like Rasboras, small Tetras, and Corydoras. Avoid housing them with overly boisterous or aggressive fish, as Badis badis may be outcompeted for food or stressed by active tank mates. Shrimp should be avoided, as they may be viewed as prey.

Care Tips:

Maintain stable water conditions with regular partial water changes to ensure the health of Badis badis. Provide plenty of hiding spots and a naturalistic environment to encourage their natural behaviors. Feed a varied diet with a focus on live or frozen foods to meet their nutritional needs. If keeping multiple males, ensure the tank is large enough to allow for territories and reduce the risk of conflict.

The Blue Perch, Badis badis, is a captivating and manageable species that rewards aquarists with its stunning colors and fascinating behaviors. Its peaceful nature, adaptability, and unique charm make it an excellent choice for those looking to add a touch of elegance and personality to their aquarium.
