Background:
Caridina multidentata, widely known as Amano Shrimp, is a highly valued freshwater shrimp in the aquatics trade for its exceptional algae-eating abilities and peaceful nature. Originating from Japan and Taiwan, it is also known as Algae Eating Shrimp, Yamato Shrimp, and Japanese Swamp Shrimp. These translucent shrimp, often showing a light brown to grey body with dotted lateral lines, are celebrated for actively consuming various algae types, including stubborn string hair algae, making them a staple in planted aquascapes. Their subtle coloration allows them to blend beautifully into lush tanks while their active grazing makes them constantly visible, adding movement and utility to any system.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters: Ideal temperature range is 20–26°C, pH between 6.5–7.5, with water hardness around 4–8 dGH.
Diet: Primarily algae grazers, they thrive on biofilm, algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini and spinach, and high-quality shrimp-specific pellets. Supplementing their diet ensures health when algae levels are low.
Tank Setup: A planted tank of at least 40 litres with plenty of moss, fine-leaved plants, and driftwood provides foraging surfaces and hiding areas. Use fine sand or smooth gravel substrate to prevent injury to their delicate limbs. Moderate lighting encourages algae growth for grazing.
Behavior: Amano Shrimp are peaceful, highly active, and social, preferring to be kept in groups of at least 5–6 to reduce stress and encourage natural behaviors. They are diurnal and will be seen constantly foraging throughout the tank.
Tank Mates: Compatible with peaceful fish like small tetras, rasboras, and other dwarf shrimp. Avoid keeping them with aggressive or predatory species such as large cichlids or crayfish that may harm them.
Care Tips:
Regular water changes, stable water parameters, and a well-cycled tank are essential for Amano Shrimp health. Ensure there is always a food source, especially in algae-free tanks, and avoid copper-based medications, which are toxic to shrimp. Provide gentle filtration with sponge filters or pre-filters to prevent them from being sucked in while maintaining high water quality.
