DESCRIPTION

Echinodorus opacus ‘Iguazu 2009’

Echinodorus opacus ‘Iguazu 2009’ is a rare and beautifully compact wild-type sword plant originating from the Iguazu region of southern Brazil. Known for its deep green, firm leaves and soft, natural texture, this plant carries a quiet elegance that sets it apart from the larger, fast-growing Echinodorus commonly seen in aquariums. Its leaves form a low, structured rosette, while the creeping rhizome allows the plant to shift slowly across the substrate over time, creating a subtle, organic movement in the layout.

This variant grows slowly and maintains a modest size, making it ideal for aquascapes that require refinement rather than volume. It performs best in nutrient-rich substrate with steady CO₂ support, and under medium lighting the plant displays rich colour and well-defined venation. Native to a region with cooler seasonal temperatures, it tolerates drops to around 20 °C, allowing for flexible placement in a wide range of aquarium conditions.

Echinodorus opacus ‘Iguazu 2009’ is beautifully suited to natural layouts, especially those inspired by riverbanks, stones, and flowing water. Its compact form works well as a midground accent or as a foreground feature in deeper tanks. Mature specimens with a full crown of leaves offer a striking sense of age and authenticity, making this plant a treasured addition for collectors and nature aquascapers alike.
