DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Glowlight Rasbora, scientifically known as Trigonostigma hengeli, is a small and elegant freshwater fish native to the slow-moving streams and peat swamps of Southeast Asia, particularly in Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. It is easily recognized by its translucent body adorned with a striking orange stripe that runs along its midline, giving it a glowing appearance under aquarium lighting. Reaching an adult size of about 2–2.5 cm, this species is a peaceful, schooling fish that is highly sought after by aquarists for its beauty and ease of care. It is sometimes referred to as the Hengel's Rasbora.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–28°C
    • pH: 5.5–7.0
    • Hardness: 1–10 dGH
  • Diet:
Glowlight Rasboras are omnivorous and enjoy a diet of finely crushed flakes, micro pellets, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and mosquito larvae. Feeding 1–2 times a day in small portions ensures their health and maintains water clarity.

  • Tank Setup:
A tank of at least 40 liters is suitable for a small school of 8–10 individuals. Use a fine, dark substrate to accentuate their vibrant coloration and mimic their natural environment. Provide plenty of live plants like Java fern, Cryptocoryne, or Amazon swords, along with floating plants to create shaded areas. Include driftwood and leaf litter to simulate the tannin-rich waters of their native habitat. Keep lighting subdued to moderate and use a gentle filter to maintain water flow.

  • Behavior:
These peaceful, shoaling fish thrive in groups of 6 or more, where they exhibit their best coloration and natural behaviors. They are active swimmers, preferring the mid-levels of the aquarium, and coexist well with other non-aggressive species.

  • Tank Mates:
Glowlight Rasboras are compatible with similarly sized, peaceful fish such as Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras, and Corydoras catfish. They also pair well with invertebrates like Amano or Cherry Shrimp. Avoid housing them with larger, aggressive species to prevent stress or predation.

Care Tips:

Maintain stable, soft, and slightly acidic water conditions to mimic their natural habitat. Regular water changes and a good filtration system are essential for their health. A dimly lit area in your planted tank highlights their glowing stripe and provides a sense of security. Ensure the tank is well-covered, as these fish may jump when startled.

Glowlight Rasboras are an ideal choice for aquarists seeking a tranquil and visually stunning community fish. Their glowing appearance, peaceful nature, and compatibility with a variety of species make them an excellent addition to well-maintained freshwater aquariums.
