Understanding pH in Your Aquarium

pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline your aquarium water is. The Broad Range pH Test included in the NTLabs Aquarium Lab Multi-Test Kit is designed to accurately measure pH levels between 6.0 and 9.0, the most common range for freshwater aquariums. This updated test offers improved precision, allowing for 0.5 unit increments to help you better monitor and manage water conditions.

Ideal pH Levels

There is no single correct pH value for all aquariums. Different species of fish have varying pH preferences depending on their natural habitat. As a general guideline, most freshwater fish thrive in a pH range between 7.0 and 8.0. However, some species may require slightly more acidic or alkaline water. When buying new fish, always ask your local aquatic retailer about the preferred water conditions for each species.

Managing Incorrect pH Levels

If your aquarium's pH is outside the desired range, any adjustments should be made gradually to avoid stressing or harming your fish. Never change the pH by more than 0.5 units within a 48-hour period.

  • If your tap water is within the correct pH range, performing large partial water changes can help safely correct pH issues

  • Check the KH (carbonate hardness) of your water, as low KH can lead to unstable pH

  • Use pH adjusters like KH Up – pH Stabiliser to raise pH in soft or aged water

  • To lower pH naturally for soft water species, use bogwood or other materials that gently acidify the water over time

Consistent testing and slow adjustments are key to maintaining a stable and healthy aquarium environment.

How to Perform a pH Test

  1. Ensure the test tube is clean

  2. Add 5 millilitres of aquarium water to the test tube

  3. Add 5 drops of the pH reagent

  4. Cap the test tube and shake thoroughly to mix

  5. Compare the resulting colour to the provided colour scale to determine the pH level

Regular pH testing allows you to maintain ideal conditions for your fish, prevent stress, and avoid sudden changes that can lead to health problems. The NTLabs Aquarium Lab Multi-Test Kit makes accurate pH monitoring quick and easy.
