Hydrocotyle tripartita is a fast-growing, light green creeping plant adored in the aquascaping world for its distinctive clover-shaped leaves and versatile use. Originally from Australia and often referred to as Hydrocotyle sp. "Japan", it has become a favourite for creating lush carpets, cascading accents, or midground highlights in both high-tech and low-tech setups.

This charming water pennywort has made a strong impression in the aquascaping community thanks to its small, fresh green, three-lobed leaves and ability to grow in a variety of forms—creeping across the substrate, climbing over hardscape, or even trailing from elevated surfaces. While it naturally grows across the ground in bright light and CO₂-rich environments, in lower-tech tanks, it tends to grow upward with a more scattered appearance.
Despite its delicate appearance, Hydrocotyle tripartita is quite hardy and adaptable. It thrives under strong lighting with added CO₂ and nutrients, forming compact, lush mats. In lower-energy setups, it remains attractive but may grow more loosely. Regular trimming helps maintain a neat carpet and encourages lateral spread.
Whether used in the foreground, as a vertical accent, or even in emersed conditions (such as paludariums and Wabi-Kusa), this plant offers aquascapers a fresh pop of colour and intricate texture. It pairs beautifully with hardscape and contrasts nicely against broader-leaved or red-toned species.
