DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Microsorum pteropus, commonly known as Java Fern, is one of the most popular and versatile aquatic plants in the aquarium hobby. Native to Southeast Asia, this hardy epiphytic plant thrives in a variety of conditions and is well-suited for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. Its long, lance-shaped green leaves create a lush and natural look, making it an excellent choice for freshwater planted tanks. Java Fern can be attached to driftwood, rocks, or decorations, providing an easy and low-maintenance way to enhance aquascapes.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–28°C
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • Hardness: Soft to medium (3–15 dGH)
  • Nutrient Requirements:
Java Fern primarily absorbs nutrients from the water column, making liquid fertilizers beneficial for optimal growth. It does not require a nutrient-rich substrate, as it should not be planted in soil. CO₂ supplementation is optional but can encourage faster growth and healthier foliage.

  • Tank Setup:

    • Recommended tank size: 20L and above
    • Substrate: Not required, as Java Fern should be attached to driftwood or rocks
    • Lighting: Low to medium lighting is sufficient; high lighting may cause leaf burn
    • Placement: Best suited for midground or background placement
    • Flow: Prefers gentle to moderate water movement

Care Tips:

Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can cause rot. Instead, attach the plant to hardscape materials using thread, glue, or fishing line. Remove older or damaged leaves to encourage fresh growth. If leaves develop black spots, this may indicate natural reproduction, as Java Fern propagates through small plantlets forming on mature leaves.

Java Fern is a perfect choice for low-maintenance aquariums, providing a beautiful, natural aesthetic without demanding specialized care. Its adaptability, slow growth, and unique leaf structure make it a favorite for aquascapers of all skill levels.

Note: Product images are for display purposes only. As a natural product, variations in size, shape, and color will occur. Please ensure you have selected either the rhizome, portion, or potted option before purchasing.
