Rotala sp. ‘Blood Red’ is one of the most vibrant and eye-catching stem plants in the aquascaping world. Known for its intense deep red to burgundy tones under optimal conditions, this plant adds dramatic contrast and colour to planted aquariums. Its slender leaves and upright growth make it ideal for creating vibrant focal areas in midground to background layouts.

Family: Lythraceae
Origin: Asia (exact origin unknown, cultivated variant)
Height: 20 – 40 cm
Light Requirements: High
CO₂ Requirements: High
Growth Rate: Moderate to Fast
Difficulty Level: Moderate to Advanced
Available Information:
This stunning Rotala variety develops its signature red colour only under intense lighting and with sufficient CO₂ injection. In lower-energy setups, it may grow slower and appear more greenish or orange. When cared for properly, Rotala ‘Blood Red’ rewards aquascapers with rich red stems and leaves that enhance depth, contrast, and visual movement in the aquarium.
To support its vivid colouration and healthy growth, maintain stable conditions with soft to slightly acidic water (pH 5.5–7.0) and temperatures between 20–28 °C. This plant is a heavy feeder and requires regular dosing of liquid or root-based fertilizers—especially iron—to maintain its vibrant hues.
Regular trimming is essential to avoid legginess and promote denser, bushier growth. The trimmed tops can be replanted to thicken the plant group and maintain a lush, uniform appearance.
Rotala sp. ‘Blood Red’ is best used in the midground or background of high-tech aquascapes. It contrasts beautifully against green plants and helps highlight hardscape elements or create colour transitions in layered layouts. With consistent care, it can also be used to form a low, red carpet when densely planted and frequently trimmed.
