Paracheirodon innesi (Neon Tetra)

The Neon Tetra is one of the most iconic and beloved freshwater fish in the hobby, celebrated for its striking electric-blue stripe and vibrant red coloration. Peaceful, active, and full of personality, these small schooling fish bring movement and colour to any community aquarium. Easy to care for and suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists, they thrive in well-kept tanks with stable water conditions.

General Description

Neon Tetras originate from the slow-moving blackwater tributaries of the Amazon basin. Their shimmering blue line and bright red tail make them instantly recognisable. In a well-maintained aquarium with a group of 10 or more, they display natural schooling behaviour and feel secure, which enhances their colours and activity.

Tank Mates

Neon Tetras are peaceful and do best in calm community setups. Ideal tank mates include:

  • Other small tetras (Cardinal, Ember, Glowlight)

  • Corydoras catfish

  • Otocinclus

  • Small peaceful rasboras

  • Dwarf gouramis (peaceful varieties)

  • Shrimp and snails

Avoid: Large or aggressive tank mates such as cichlids, barbs, or predatory species that may see them as food.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum tank size: 60 litres

  • Temperature: 22–26°C

  • pH: 6.0–7.2

  • Hardness: Soft to moderately soft water

  • Environment: Dim lighting, plants, driftwood, leaf litter, and open swimming space

  • Schooling: Keep in groups of at least 8–10

Diet

Neon Tetras are omnivores and accept a wide range of foods. For best health and colour:

  • High-quality micro pellets

  • Fine flakes

  • Frozen or live foods (daphnia, baby brine shrimp, micro worms)

  • Occasional vegetable-based foods

A varied diet supports strong colouration and a healthy immune system.

Breeding

Breeding Neon Tetras can be challenging but rewarding:

  • Use a separate breeding tank with soft, acidic water (pH 5.0–6.0).

  • Dim lighting, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops help mimic natural habitats.

  • Condition adults with live or frozen foods.

  • Once eggs are laid, remove the parents—they may eat the eggs.

  • Eggs hatch within 24–36 hours; fry require very fine foods like infusoria before transitioning to baby brine shrimp.

Water Conditions & Care Notes

  • Maintain stable water conditions—Neons do not tolerate sudden changes.

  • Perform regular small water changes rather than large ones.

  • Avoid very hard, alkaline water.

  • Provide plenty of plant cover to reduce stress and enhance schooling behaviour.
