DESCRIPTION

Zebra Nerite Neritina/(Vittina) turrita

It has a gold-coloured shell with black stripes of varying width, some very narrow, some quite wide bands. It grows to 2.5cm long, lives on hard substrate or rock (doesn't burrow) and rasps algae from rocks. Larvae survive only in brackish water.

Benefits for aquariums
  • Effective algae control: Zebra nerites are excellent scavengers that consume various types of algae, including stubborn green spot algae, from glass, plants, and decor without harming live plants.
  • Controlled population: They cannot reproduce successfully in freshwater aquariums, so they will not overpopulate your tank. While females may lay small, white eggs ("sesame seeds") on hard surfaces, these will not hatch.
  • Peaceful community members: Their docile temperament makes them safe and compatible with nearly all peaceful fish, shrimp, and other snail specie
Minimum Tank Size 5 gallons (approx. 20 liters)
Water Parameters Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
pH: 7.0–8.5 (slightly alkaline)
Hardness: Moderate to hard water with added calcium helps maintain strong shells.
Substrate & Decor Prefers smooth surfaces for grazing. A mature tank with rocks, driftwood, and plants will provide ample surfaces for algae and biofilm.
Feeding Primarily eats algae and biofilm. If algae is insufficient, supplement with algae wafers, sinking herbivore pellets, or blanched vegetables like zucchini, spinach, or kale.
Water Quality Requires stable water conditions. Be aware that these snails are very sensitive to copper, which is toxic to invertebrates and sometimes found in tap water or medications.
Tank Environment A tight-fitting lid is essential, as these snails are known to climb out of the water and can escape the tank.
Lifespan Typically lives 1–2 years in an aquarium, though some have been known to live longer with ideal care.
Size Grows to about 0.75–1.5 inches (2–3.8 cm) in diameter.
