Badis badis (The Blue Perch)

Background:

Badis badis, commonly known as the Blue Perch or Dwarf Badis, is a striking freshwater species known for its vibrant coloration and peaceful demeanor. Native to the slow-moving, vegetation-rich waters of South Asia, this fish exhibits an enchanting blend of reds, blues, and earthy tones. Males are especially vivid during breeding, showcasing distinct color bands and iridescent scales, while females display a more subdued yet charming appearance. This shy, micro-predatory species is a perfect addition to a tranquil, well-planted aquarium.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–27°C (72–80°F)

    • pH: 6.0–7.5

    • Hardness: 5–15 dGH (soft to moderately hard water)

  • Diet: Badis badis thrives on a varied diet of live or frozen foods, including bloodworms, daphnia, brine shrimp, and tubifex. While they may accept high-quality pellets or flakes, live or frozen food promotes their vibrant colors and health.

  • Tank Setup: A minimum tank size of 40 liters is recommended, with a soft substrate of sand or fine gravel, leaf litter, and ample hiding spaces such as driftwood, caves, and rocks. Low to moderate lighting mimics their shaded natural habitat.

  • Behavior: Peaceful yet territorial, especially during breeding. Best kept in a species-only setup or with calm, non-competitive tank mates.

  • Tank Mates: Suitable companions include small rasboras, dwarf gouramis, tetras, corydoras, and small loaches. Avoid larger, active, or aggressive species that may outcompete them for food.

Care Tips:

  • Provide ample cover with plants and decor to make them feel secure, encouraging natural behavior and vibrant displays.

  • Perform regular water changes to maintain soft, clean water conditions, as Badis badis is sensitive to poor water quality.

  • Feed small portions 1–2 times daily with a focus on live or frozen foods for optimal health and coloration.

  • During breeding, observe males for territorial behavior as they defend spawning sites and care for eggs.

The Blue Perch is a fascinating choice for aquarists seeking a peaceful, colorful species that thrives in a natural, well-planned aquascape. Their shy yet curious nature makes them a rewarding addition to freshwater setups.
