Background:

The Kubotai Rasbora, scientifically known as Microdevario kubotai, is a strikingly beautiful freshwater fish native to the clear, fast-flowing streams of Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Myanmar. This small, streamlined fish is renowned for its iridescent greenish-yellow body, which shimmers brilliantly under aquarium lighting, making it a favorite among aquarists. Other common names for this species include Green Neon Rasbora or Yellow Neon Rasbora. With a maximum size of about 2–3 cm, this species is perfect for nano tanks or as a vibrant addition to a larger community setup. Its peaceful nature and schooling behavior add a dynamic charm to any aquarium.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–28°C
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • Hardness: 1–12 dGH
  • Diet:
Kubotai Rasboras thrive on a varied diet of high-quality micro pellets, crushed flakes, and frozen or live foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and micro worms. Feed small portions 1–2 times daily to prevent overfeeding and maintain water quality.

  • Tank Setup:
Provide a tank of at least 40 liters to accommodate a small school of 8–10 fish. A soft, sandy substrate is ideal, along with plenty of live plants like Java moss, Anubias, or Cryptocoryne species to replicate their natural environment. Driftwood and smooth stones can be added to enhance aesthetics and provide hiding spots. Maintain moderate lighting to accentuate their iridescent coloration. A gentle flow mimicking their native streams is beneficial, so consider a filter with adjustable output.

  • Behavior:
Kubotai Rasboras are peaceful and highly social, thriving in groups of at least 8–10 individuals. They display fascinating schooling behavior and are most active in the mid-to-upper water column. They are non-aggressive and unlikely to bother other tank inhabitants.

  • Tank Mates:
Ideal companions include other small, peaceful species such as Ember Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Pygmy Corydoras, and small shrimp like Cherry Shrimp. Avoid housing them with larger, aggressive species that may see them as prey.

Care Tips:

To ensure the health of your Kubotai Rasboras, maintain stable water conditions with regular partial water changes and avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature or pH. Provide a well-balanced diet and observe their schooling behavior regularly to detect any signs of stress or illness. Using a dark substrate and a planted tank setup will enhance their coloration and provide a sense of security.

Kubotai Rasboras are a delightful addition to any peaceful community aquarium. Their dazzling colors, active schooling behavior, and ease of care make them an excellent choice for beginners and seasoned aquarists alike, especially those seeking to create a serene, nature-inspired aquatic environment.
