DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Bolbitis heudelotii, commonly known as the African Water Fern, is a striking aquatic fern species native to the tropical regions of West and Central Africa. Known for its elegant, deeply lobed green fronds and graceful flowing growth pattern, this plant brings a natural, jungle-like aesthetic to freshwater aquariums. It is a rheophytic species, typically found growing along riverbanks and submerged wood in fast-moving streams. With its unique texture and moderate care needs, Bolbitis heudelotii is a favorite among aquascaping enthusiasts seeking a lush and organic look.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:
    Temperature: 20–28°C
    pH Range: 5.5–7.5
    Hardness: Soft to medium (2–12°dH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
While not a heavy feeder, African Water Fern thrives with regular dosing of liquid fertilizers containing micronutrients. Root tabs are not necessary unless planted near the substrate, and CO₂ supplementation can enhance growth but is not essential.

  • Tank Setup:
Substrate: Not required—should be tied or glued to driftwood, lava rock, or other porous surfaces
Decorations: Prefers shaded areas or filtered light beneath hardscape or tall plants
Lighting: Low to medium; too much direct light may promote algae growth on fronds
    CO₂: Optional

Care Tips:

Avoid burying the rhizome in substrate, as this can cause rot. Instead, secure the plant to rocks or driftwood using thread or aquarium-safe glue. It prefers stable water conditions and does best in a mature tank with gentle to moderate water flow. Prune older, yellowing leaves to encourage healthy new growth, and be patient—Bolbitis heudelotii is a slow grower but well worth the wait.

With its fern-like appearance and slow, graceful movement in flowing water, African Water Fern adds texture and tranquility to any aquascape. Ideal for background or midground placement in natural-themed tanks, it's a perfect choice for hobbyists who appreciate subtropical elegance with minimal upkeep.

Please note: Product images are for display purposes only. As a natural product, plant appearance will vary. Be sure to check whether you have selected the net pot or loose plant option when adding to your cart.
