Corydoras pygmaeus (Pygmy Corydoras)

Background:

Corydoras pygmaeus, commonly known as the Pygmy Corydoras, is a delightful nano catfish species native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of South America. Unlike other corydoras, this species is known for its mid-water swimming behavior, often schooling actively in the middle of the aquarium while occasionally scavenging along the bottom. Their small size, peaceful nature, and fascinating activity make them a perfect addition to planted and community aquariums.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F)

    • pH: 6.4–7.4

    • Hardness: 2–12 dGH (soft to moderately hard water)

  • Diet: Omnivorous; Pygmy Corydoras thrive on a varied diet of small frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, mosquito larvae), high-quality catfish pellets, and crushed flake foods. They will also graze on micro-organisms and biofilm.

  • Tank Setup: A fine sand substrate is essential to protect their sensitive barbels. Include plants, driftwood, and smooth rocks to provide cover and grazing areas. A well-established tank with gentle filtration ensures a stable environment.

  • Behavior: Peaceful and social, Pygmy Corydoras thrive in schools of 8 or more individuals. Their mid-water swimming behavior adds dynamic movement to the tank.

  • Tank Size: Minimum of 40 liters (10 gallons) to accommodate a school.

Care Tips:

  • Keep in larger schools to observe their natural, active schooling behavior and to reduce stress.

  • Ensure all food offered is small enough to fit their tiny mouths for easy consumption.

  • Maintain clean water conditions through regular water changes to support their sensitive nature.

  • Avoid aggressive tank mates that may outcompete them for food or cause stress.

Suitable Tank Mates:

  • Nano Rasboras (e.g., Chili Rasboras)

  • Ember Tetras

  • Dwarf Shrimp (e.g., Neocaridina)

  • Otocinclus Catfish

  • Peaceful Nano Fish

The Pygmy Corydoras is a unique, active addition to nano and community tanks, offering both charm and utility as a bottom scavenger and mid-water swimmer. Their peaceful demeanor and fascinating behavior make them a standout species for hobbyists of all experience levels.
