Cholla Wood – Proudly South African

Cholla wood is sourced from the Cylindropuntia bigelovii cactus, native to Mexico and the USA. After the cactus dies and dries, the remaining woody skeleton forms the unique and stunning cholla wood. While traditionally found in North America, our Cholla wood is proudly South African, carefully gathered and sourced locally.

Why Cholla Wood in Your Aquarium?

Cholla wood offers numerous benefits in aquariums, making it a popular choice for both freshwater and saltwater setups:

  • Natural Hiding Spots: The hollow structure of cholla wood creates perfect hideouts for fish, particularly shy or small species, helping them feel secure and reducing stress.

  • Beneficial Bacteria Growth: Its porous texture encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria, aiding in the breakdown of organic waste and improving water quality by supporting the nitrogen cycle.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: With its rustic, natural appearance, cholla wood adds an organic touch to your aquascape, creating visual interest and texture in the aquarium.

  • Supports Plant Growth: Cholla wood provides a natural surface for aquarium plants to attach to, encouraging lush growth and further enhancing the ecosystem.

  • Water Parameter Support: By releasing tannins, cholla wood can help slightly lower the pH, mimicking the natural conditions of species from soft, acidic waters.

  • Low Maintenance: Cholla wood is durable and stable, requiring minimal upkeep while lasting for a long time in the aquarium.

  • Food Source for Shrimp and Invertebrates: It offers a food source for shrimp and other invertebrates, as they feed on the biofilm that forms on the wood's surface.

  • Enrichment for Fish: Species like catfish and plecos benefit from chewing on cholla wood, which helps maintain their teeth and satisfies their natural behaviors.

Note: The density of the wood affects its longevity. The heavier the cholla wood, the thicker the side walls, leading to a longer-lasting and more resilient product.
