Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo' (Monte Carlo)
Introduction:
Micranthemum tweediei 'Monte Carlo', commonly known as Monte Carlo, is a vibrant carpeting aquatic plant prized for its small, bright green, rounded leaves and low-growing habit. Native to Argentina, this species is a favorite among aquascaping enthusiasts for its dense, lush mats that bring a vivid foreground contrast to planted tanks. Known for its adaptability and relatively easy care compared to similar carpeting species, Monte Carlo is an excellent choice for both beginners and experienced aquarists looking to create a natural, ground-covering effect.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20–26°C
pH: 6.0–7.5
Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12 dGH)
Nutrient Requirements:
Monte Carlo thrives with regular fertilization, including both macro and micronutrients. Supplementing with CO₂ significantly boosts growth rate and density. It absorbs nutrients from both the substrate and the water column, making it compatible with root tabs or nutrient-rich substrates.
Tank Setup:
Ideal for foreground placement in aquariums from 20 litres upward. Prefers fine-grain or nutrient-rich substrate to anchor its shallow roots. Bright lighting is essential to promote compact, horizontal growth and prevent vertical stretching. Gentle water flow supports health without dislodging the delicate roots. Open areas and clear views allow Monte Carlo to form its signature carpet effect.
Care Tips:
Regular trimming encourages lateral spreading and denser carpets. Introduce gradually to avoid melting; new growth usually establishes within a few weeks. Use aquascaping tools for precise planting and better rooting. CO₂ injection and high lighting produce the best aesthetic results but are not mandatory for survival.
Monte Carlo’s ease of maintenance, adaptability, and lush appearance make it a staple in aquascaping. It’s perfect for creating serene underwater landscapes with a vibrant green foreground.
