DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Nymphaea rubra, commonly known as the Red Water Lily, is a stunning aquatic plant prized for its broad, deep red to burgundy leaves and elegant lily pads. Native to India and Southeast Asia, this species is highly sought after for its striking coloration and ability to add a natural, dramatic look to aquariums. It grows from a bulb, producing both submerged and floating leaves, and can even bloom under the right conditions, displaying beautiful red or pink flowers. Nymphaea rubra is an excellent choice for midground to background placement in aquascapes, where it provides contrast and a lush, tropical aesthetic.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature range of 22–30°C, with an optimal pH of 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (2–12 dGH).
  • Nutrient Requirements: Benefits from nutrient-rich substrate and root fertilization. Additional liquid fertilization and CO₂ supplementation enhance growth and coloration.
  • Tank Setup: Requires moderate to high lighting to maintain its vibrant red hues. The bulb should be placed on top of the substrate rather than buried to allow proper sprouting. Regular pruning helps manage leaf size and prevent excessive surface coverage.

Care Tips:

To encourage compact growth and avoid excessive floating leaves, trim the larger leaves and encourage submerged growth. Place the bulb on the substrate and allow it to sprout naturally—do not bury it completely. Consistent fertilization and good lighting will enhance its deep red coloration.
