Background:

The Golden Otocinclus, Macrotocinclus affinis, is a small and peaceful freshwater fish known for its algae-eating abilities and understated beauty. Native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, particularly in Brazil, this species features a pale cream or silvery body with a dark stripe along its side. Despite its common name, the "Golden" Otocinclus rarely displays a true golden hue, though its subtle coloration lends it a natural charm. Growing to about 4–5 cm, these fish are highly social and thrive in groups. They are favored by aquarists for their utility in controlling algae and their gentle disposition.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–26°C
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • Hardness: 4–12 dGH
  • Diet:
Golden Otocinclus primarily feed on biofilm and algae. Supplement their diet with sinking algae wafers, blanched vegetables like zucchini or cucumber, and occasional treats such as spirulina-based foods. Regular feeding is important, especially in newer tanks or those with limited algae growth.

  • Tank Setup:
A tank of at least 60 liters is recommended for a group of 5 or more individuals. Use a soft substrate to protect their sensitive undersides and provide plenty of live plants, driftwood, and rocks to encourage biofilm growth and offer hiding places. Moderate lighting supports algae growth and enhances their natural habitat. Gentle water flow mimics their native environments, and stable water conditions are critical for their health.

  • Behavior:
Golden Otocinclus are peaceful, social fish that thrive in groups of their own kind. They spend most of their time grazing on algae and biofilm across tank surfaces. Their calm demeanor makes them ideal companions for a tranquil aquarium.

  • Tank Mates:
Compatible with small, peaceful species like Tetras, Rasboras, and Corydoras, as well as invertebrates such as Amano or Cherry Shrimp. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive species that could stress them or interfere with their grazing behavior.

Care Tips:

Maintain high water quality with regular partial water changes, as Golden Otocinclus are sensitive to poor conditions. Ensure a consistent food source by providing supplemental algae wafers or blanched vegetables, particularly in tanks with insufficient natural algae. Keep them in groups of at least 5 to encourage social behavior and reduce stress. A well-planted tank not only mimics their natural habitat but also fosters biofilm growth for grazing.

The Golden Otocinclus may not live up to its name in terms of vibrant coloration, but its understated elegance, algae-eating prowess, and peaceful nature make it a valuable and delightful addition to any community aquarium.
