ackground:

The Celestial Pearl Danio, Danio margaritatus, is a breathtakingly beautiful freshwater fish discovered in small ponds and streams in Myanmar. Its shimmering body is adorned with pearl-like spots, while the fins display vivid red and black patterns, making it one of the most stunning small fish in the aquarium hobby. Growing to a modest size of 2–2.5 cm, this species is also known as the Galaxy Rasbora due to its celestial appearance. Peaceful and hardy, it is a favorite among aquarists seeking a vibrant yet manageable fish for nano or planted tanks.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–26°C
    • pH: 6.5–7.5
    • Hardness: 2–10 dGH
  • Diet:
Celestial Pearl Danios are omnivorous, thriving on a varied diet. Feed them high-quality micro pellets or flakes, and supplement with live or frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp, and microworms. Their small mouths require finely crushed food, and feeding them 2–3 times a day in small portions is ideal.

  • Tank Setup:
A tank of at least 40 liters is suitable for a small group of 6–8 individuals. A fine, dark substrate enhances their coloration, and a densely planted tank with floating plants provides cover and mimics their natural habitat. Incorporate driftwood and smooth stones for added aesthetics and hiding spots. Maintain gentle water flow to match their preference for calm waters.

  • Behavior:
Celestial Pearl Danios are peaceful, shoaling fish that thrive in groups of 8 or more. They prefer the mid-to-lower levels of the tank and exhibit shy behavior in sparse environments but become more confident in well-planted setups. Observing their interactions and subtle displays is a rewarding experience.

  • Tank Mates:
Compatible tank mates include other small, peaceful species such as Ember Tetras, Pygmy Corydoras, and shrimp like Cherry or Amano Shrimp. Avoid keeping them with larger or boisterous fish that may intimidate or outcompete them for food.

Care Tips:

To bring out their best colors and behavior, maintain excellent water quality with regular partial water changes and a stable environment. A densely planted tank not only provides security but also encourages natural behaviors. Keep them in groups of 8 or more to reduce stress and foster shoaling dynamics. Avoid bright lighting without shaded areas, as they prefer a slightly subdued environment.

The Celestial Pearl Danio is a true gem in the aquarium world, combining vivid colors with a peaceful demeanor. Its small size, stunning appearance, and suitability for nano setups make it an ideal choice for aquarists looking to create a serene and visually captivating aquatic landscape.
