Background:

The Pygmy Corydoras, Corydoras pygmaeus, is a delightful and diminutive freshwater catfish native to the slow-moving rivers and streams of South America, particularly in Brazil and Ecuador. This species stands out among Corydoras for its unique behavior, often swimming mid-water in loose schools rather than staying exclusively at the bottom. Its slender body, adorned with a silver base color and a striking black horizontal stripe running from its nose to tail, makes it an elegant addition to nano and community aquariums. Growing to just 2–3 cm, the Pygmy Corydoras is a hardy and peaceful fish ideal for aquarists of all experience levels.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 22–26°C
    • pH: 6.0–7.5
    • Hardness: 2–15 dGH
  • Diet:
Pygmy Corydoras are omnivorous and thrive on a diet of high-quality micro pellets, finely crushed flakes, and live or frozen foods such as daphnia, cyclops, and microworms. Their small size requires appropriately sized food, and feeding them twice daily in small portions ensures optimal health.

  • Tank Setup:
A minimum tank size of 40 liters is recommended for a group of 6 or more individuals. Use a soft sand substrate to protect their sensitive barbels while foraging. A well-planted tank with live plants such as Java moss, Anubias, and Cryptocorynes provides shelter and a sense of security. Include driftwood, leaf litter, and smooth stones for additional hiding spots. A gentle water flow mimics their natural habitat and supports their well-being.

  • Behavior:
Pygmy Corydoras are peaceful and social fish that thrive in groups. Unlike most Corydoras, they are more active in the mid-water column, often forming small, synchronized schools. Their playful and energetic interactions make them a joy to observe.

  • Tank Mates:
Suitable companions include small, peaceful species such as Ember Tetras, Green Neon Tetras, and small Rasboras. They also coexist well with shrimp species like Cherry or Amano Shrimp. Avoid housing them with larger or aggressive fish that might intimidate or outcompete them for food.

Care Tips:

Regular partial water changes and stable water parameters are essential to maintain the health of Pygmy Corydoras, as they are sensitive to poor conditions. Keep them in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural schooling behavior. Providing a soft substrate is critical for protecting their delicate barbels during foraging. A densely planted environment with shaded areas helps them feel secure and promotes their activity.

The Pygmy Corydoras is a charming and adaptable species that brings both activity and elegance to small or peaceful community aquariums. Its playful schooling behavior, peaceful nature, and manageable care requirements make it a perfect choice for nano tank enthusiasts and aquarists looking to add a lively touch to their setup.
