DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Hygrophila corymbosa 'Variegatus' is a striking and rare variety of Hygrophila corymbosa, distinguished by its beautifully variegated leaves with green and creamy white patterns. Native to Southeast Asia, this fast-growing stem plant adds a unique touch to planted aquariums with its contrasting foliage and bushy growth habit. It thrives in midground to background placements, where its vibrant leaves provide depth and visual interest. Like other Hygrophila species, this plant is hardy and adaptable, making it a great choice for aquarists of all experience levels.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature range of 22–28°C, with an optimal pH of 6.0–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (3–12 dGH).
  • Nutrient Requirements: Requires regular fertilization, particularly iron and micronutrients, to maintain healthy variegation. CO₂ supplementation encourages faster growth and brighter coloration.
  • Tank Setup: Thrives under moderate to high lighting, which enhances its variegated leaf patterns. Best planted in a nutrient-rich substrate but can also grow in fine gravel with root tabs. Regular pruning helps maintain a bushy form and prevents shading of lower leaves.

Care Tips:

To keep the variegation vibrant, ensure high lighting and a balanced fertilization routine. Regular trimming encourages bushy growth and prevents the plant from growing too tall. This plant can be grown emersed in paludariums, where its leaves will develop a more rigid structure.

Hygrophila corymbosa 'Variegatus' is an exceptional choice for aquascapers looking to add unique coloration and texture to their aquariums. Its beautifully patterned leaves make it a standout feature, providing a refreshing contrast to solid green plants. This easy-to-care-for species offers both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits, such as oxygenation and shelter for aquatic life.
