DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Microsorum pteropus 'Broad Leaf', commonly known as Broad Leaf Java Fern, is a larger and more robust variant of the classic Java Fern. It features wider, longer leaves that create a bold and lush appearance in freshwater aquariums. Native to Southeast Asia, this hardy epiphytic plant thrives when attached to hard surfaces like driftwood or rocks, making it an excellent choice for aquascapers looking to add depth and structure to their tanks. Its low-maintenance nature makes it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters: Prefers a temperature range of 20–28°C, with an optimal pH of 5.5–7.5 and soft to moderately hard water (3–15 dGH).
  • Nutrient Requirements: Absorbs nutrients from the water column, so liquid fertilization is beneficial. CO₂ supplementation is not necessary but enhances growth.
  • Tank Setup: Thrives under low to moderate lighting, making it ideal for low-tech setups. Best attached to hard surfaces like driftwood or rocks rather than buried in the substrate. The broad leaves provide excellent cover for fish and shrimp.

Care Tips:

To promote healthy growth, attach the plant to a hardscape using fishing line or aquarium-safe glue until it naturally anchors. Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can lead to rot. Pruning older leaves encourages fresh growth and helps maintain a neat appearance.

Microsorum pteropus 'Broad Leaf' is a fantastic choice for aquascapers seeking a durable, striking plant with large, vibrant foliage. Its wide leaves create a dramatic visual impact, making it a great focal point in planted aquariums while providing shelter for aquatic life.
