DESCRIPTION

Background:

The Black King Kong Panda shrimp, scientifically referred to as Caridina cf. cantonensis, is a highly prized ornamental freshwater shrimp popular in the aquascaping and shrimp-keeping communities. This striking variant of the Taiwan Bee shrimp lineage is easily recognized by its deep black and contrasting white coloration, often forming bold banding or panda-like patterns. Originating from selective breeding programs, primarily in Taiwan, this shrimp showcases the extreme refinement of genetics within the Caridina genus. Other common names include BKK Panda and Taiwan Bee Black Panda.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–24 °C

    • pH Range: 5.8–6.5

    • Hardness: Soft water; GH 4–6, KH 0–2

    • TDS: Ideally 100–150 ppm

  • Diet:
BKK Pandas thrive on a varied diet of high-quality shrimp pellets, blanched vegetables (such as spinach and zucchini), and biofilm. Supplemental feeding with protein-based foods once or twice a week supports healthy molting and coloration, but care must be taken to avoid overfeeding.

  • Tank Setup:
A mature, cycled tank of at least 20 litres is recommended, with active buffering substrate designed for soft water shrimp (such as ADA Amazonia or Brightwell Rio Escuro). Use of RO water with remineralization is common practice. Provide ample moss, leaf litter (like Indian almond leaves), and shrimp-safe hiding spots. Low lighting encourages moss growth and maintains stable parameters. Sponge filters or other low-flow filtration options are preferred to avoid stressing the shrimp.

  • Behavior:
Peaceful and shy, Black King Kong Pandas spend most of their time foraging on surfaces for biofilm. They are highly sensitive to water parameter fluctuations and require a stable, pristine environment. Stress or unstable conditions can quickly lead to health issues or mortality.

  • Tank Mates:
Best kept in a species-only tank or with other soft water, non-aggressive Caridina varieties. Avoid keeping with larger or aggressive fish, fast-swimming species, or even larger Neocaridina which may outcompete them for food or cause stress. Suitable tank mates include other Taiwan Bee shrimp or peaceful invertebrates like small snails.

Care Tips:

Maintain stable water conditions using remineralized RO water, perform small weekly water changes, and avoid sudden shifts in temperature or pH. Regularly monitor water parameters and avoid copper-based medications or additives. Feed lightly and remove uneaten food to prevent ammonia spikes.

With its captivating contrast and refined lineage, the Black King Kong Panda is a showpiece species ideal for experienced shrimp keepers seeking a visually stunning and genetically elite addition to a planted nano aquarium.
