Introduction:
Glossostigma elatinoides, widely known as Glosso or Glosso Carpet, is one of the most iconic carpeting plants in the aquascaping world. Native to New Zealand and parts of Australia, this low-growing, light-loving plant is prized for its ability to form a dense, vibrant green mat across the aquarium substrate. Its small, spoon-shaped leaves and creeping runners make it ideal for creating a lush, professional-looking aquascape, particularly in high-tech or nature-style layouts. This in vitro version offers a clean, algae- and pest-free start—perfect for sensitive tanks and pristine setups.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 22–28°C
pH Range: 5.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to medium (2–10°dH)
Nutrient Requirements:
Glosso is nutrient-hungry and thrives in a rich substrate. Regular dosing with complete liquid fertilizers and root tabs is essential. CO₂ injection is highly recommended to promote low, compact growth and prevent vertical stretching.
Tank Setup:
Minimum Tank Size: 20 litres
Substrate: Fine-grain, nutrient-rich soil or sand
Decorations: Best planted directly into substrate
Lighting: High intensity required for proper carpeting
CO₂: Strongly recommended
Care Tips:
When planting from in vitro, rinse the culture gel off thoroughly and split the clump into many small pieces. Plant each segment individually with tweezers, spaced a few centimetres apart to encourage even spreading. Trim often to encourage lateral growth and prevent vertical shoots, especially in lower light setups. Avoid shading it with tall plants or décor.
With its fast growth and striking appearance, Glossostigma elatinoides is the go-to carpeting plant for high-energy aquascapes. Perfect for creating that magazine-cover foreground, it delivers stunning results when given the right conditions—and rewards the effort with dense, healthy mats of green.
