Introduction:
Eleocharis pusilla, commonly known as Dwarf Hairgrass (Pusilla) or Mini Hairgrass, is a fine-leaved carpeting plant highly favored in aquascaping for its delicate, grass-like appearance and petite growth habit. Native to Australia and New Zealand, this species is notably smaller and softer than Eleocharis acicularis, making it an excellent foreground choice for nano tanks or detailed layout work. Its low height and dense growth pattern create a natural grassy meadow look. This in vitro version ensures a pest-free, algae-free, and snail-free start, ideal for shrimp tanks or sterile setups.
Care Requirements:
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 20–28°C
pH Range: 5.5–7.5
Hardness: Soft to medium (2–10°dH)
Nutrient Requirements:
Requires a nutrient-rich substrate for optimal root development. Benefits greatly from CO₂ supplementation and consistent fertilization with a complete liquid fertilizer. Root tabs are optional but helpful in low-tech setups.
Tank Setup:
Minimum Tank Size: 10 litres
Substrate: Fine-grain nutrient-rich soil or sand
Decorations: Best used as a carpet plant; not suited for hardscape attachment
Lighting: Medium to high for dense, even carpeting
CO₂: Strongly recommended for best coverage and growth rate
Care Tips:
When planting from in vitro, rinse off the growth gel thoroughly and divide into small clumps. Space the clumps a few centimetres apart to allow horizontal runners to spread and fill in the foreground. Trim regularly to encourage horizontal growth and prevent vertical stretching. Maintain clean water and good flow to avoid algae buildup between fine blades.
With its soft texture, miniature size, and lush green color, Eleocharis pusilla is the perfect choice for creating a natural, grassy foreground in both nano and larger aquascapes. Its clean in vitro start makes it an ideal option for hobbyists focused on healthy, algae-free growth from day one.
