DESCRIPTION

Introduction:

Bucephalandra sp. 'Red Scorpio', commonly known as Bucephalandra 'Red Scorpio', is a striking and relatively rare Bucephalandra variety, renowned for its dark, reddish-toned leaves and subtle iridescent shimmer. Native to Borneo's fast-flowing rivers and streams, this species captivates aquascapers with its rich coloration, compact growth, and elegant leaf shape. The name 'Red Scorpio' reflects the deep red and burgundy hues often seen on mature leaves under optimal conditions. Hobbyists may occasionally refer to it simply as "Buce 'Red Scorpio'," but this remains its most recognized trade name.

Care Requirements:

  • Water Parameters:

    • Temperature: 20–28°C

    • pH Range: 6.0–7.5

    • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (2–12°dGH)

  • Nutrient Requirements:
Though slow-growing, Bucephalandra 'Red Scorpio' benefits from consistent micronutrient supplementation through liquid fertilizers. Root tabs near the rhizome can further support healthy growth. CO₂ injection is not strictly necessary but will promote more intense coloration and compact form. Due to its slow pace, managing algae is essential.

  • Tank Setup:
This variety thrives when attached to hardscape elements like rocks, driftwood, or small aquascaping structures. The rhizome must remain exposed above the substrate to prevent rot. Fine gravel or sand substrates can enhance its display without interfering with growth. Moderate to low lighting is recommended to highlight its dark red tones while minimizing algae risk. A gentle water flow helps replicate its native habitat and keeps the leaves free from debris.

Care Tips:

Position Bucephalandra 'Red Scorpio' in shaded or partially shaded areas to preserve its rich colors and avoid algae buildup. Secure the plant carefully to hardscape with aquarium-safe glue or thread. Regular maintenance includes gently cleaning leaves and pruning older foliage to encourage new growth. Consistent water parameters and good circulation will ensure this beautiful species thrives.

Bucephalandra 'Red Scorpio' adds a dramatic touch to aquascapes with its deep red foliage and shimmering accents. Perfect for hobbyists seeking a bold yet low-maintenance feature plant, it brings texture, contrast, and a touch of exotic beauty to any aquarium setup.
