DESCRIPTION

A characteristic pattern on the body of these dwarf cichlids is two rows of square black spots, not unlike a checkerboard, that run along the center of the flank and below the dorsal fin. Depending on the mood of the fish, the lower row of spots can expand, forming a stripe that runs from the tip of the snout to the base of the caudal fin, while the row above it (below the dorsal fin) can disappear. The body of these attractive cichlids is slender, elongated, and copper-colored, the snout is blunt, and the mouth small.

Recommended  Tank Parameters:

Temperature: 25-28°C

Ph: 5.5-7.0

Minimum Tank Size: 60l

Care Information

Lifespan: 3-5 years

Habitat: Checkerboard Cichlids are very shy fish, often “hugging” the bottom of the tank amongst plants and scattered leaves. Provide a well planted aquarium with a great number of hiding places. They are best kept in groups of 5-8 or more as they are a group fish and will not do well on their own.

Diet: Checkerboard cichlids are omnivorous. They will be happy with a variety of food in the form of nano pellets or premium fish flakes. They also enjoy frozen bloodworms or live foods such as baby brine shrimp or daphnia.

Temperament: A very peaceful fish that does well with other fish in a community tank.

Adult Size: Males can grow up to 9cm with their long lyretails and females to around 6cm.

Selling Size: 3-5cm
